Smooth sailing for Italy in the Golden Nations League competition

Italy’s complete domination of the 2022 Sitting Volleyball Women’s European Golden Nations League was the highlight of the competition that wrapped up in the centre of Slovenian and European paravolley on Sunday afternoon.

The professionalism of Italy clearly put them in a league of their own and all their hard training paid off and was evident from start to finish.

It is all also reflected in their results – all matches won in straight sets and in under an hour, including the two quickest of the tournament, at 39 minutes against Germany and at 37 minutes against Poland.

Earlier on Day 3 of the competition Germany did what they needed to in shutting out Hungary – though their bronze medal was not actually confirmed until Poland lost to Italy.

Slovenia completed the action and wrapped up play with a sweep of Hungary to finish on a 3-1 record for the silver medal.

Italy were certainly happy at undisputedly claiming gold, but Slovenia should also be satisfied that they improved on their previous finish of third in last year’s inaugural edition of the Golden Nations League.

The final ranking was also an upgrade for Germany, who moved up one position from fourth in 2021 to third this year.

Poland were making their debut in the Nations League, having missed out last year due to coronavirus restrictions, and Hungary, despite finishing winless, also moved up a notch after playing (and winning) last year’s Silver League.
